Lanqure Bookmark Making

In this beginner-friendly session, you will create your own unique, beautifully patterned bookmark inspired by traditional Oriental lacquer art.

Guided by Jiayi Chen and Yuki Yang.

Jiayi Chen is a performance and visual artist based between Edinburgh and London. Her work is rooted in Nüshu, a women’s script from southern China, and unfolds through writing on the body, movement, voice, and live performance. Jiayi works across performance, body calligraphy, photography, and participatory workshops. She invites others to join in the act of writing, moving, and remembering together. Her practice focuses on themes of memory, migration, and how women’s stories are passed down, lost, and rewritten across generations. For Jiayi, Nüshu is more than a historical language. It is a way of listening, a way of holding grief, and a way of staying connected to the women who came before her.

Xinyi Yang (b. 1999) is a Chinese visual artist living and working in Scotland. Trained in art from an early age and graduating with a major in oil painting, she works across oil, watercolour, and drawing to explore themes of identity, boundaries, and cultural intersection. Drawing from her perspective as an Asian woman, her practice combines figurative and abstract metaphorical symbols with inspiration from classical Chinese mythology and philosophy, engaging in dialogue with Western artistic traditions. Her works often carry an intense, ambiguous atmosphere, reflecting on how existence and identity are understood across cultures.
